Gary Battershell’s “The Guardians of Spookwood” in The Rabbit Hole VII: Not From Here

I asked fellow The Rabbit Hole VII: Not From Here anthology contributors to share some things about themselves prior to publication and those generous enough to do so will be appearing here for the next week or so.

Each entry gives a taste of their contribution, a little about them, how to contact them, how their story came about, and definitely a link to The Rabbit Hole VII: Not From Here (which you should purchase because it would make each and every one of us happy.
you do want to make us happy, don’t you?
i mean, considering what we wrote, you want us to know you’re a good person, right?).

And now, Gary Battershell’s The Guardians of Spookwood:

Dirk rolled his eyes as he finished proofing a piece on the upcoming open house at the Greendale Retirement Center.
“What’s to see, a bunch of old farts and their handicrafts? I guess going to their shindig makes it easier to send grandpa to hell’s waiting room.”

How the story came about:
As far as where the inspiration for “The Guardians of Spookwood” came from, I really have no idea. It might have something to do with the fact that I’m a recovering hunter married to an animal-loving woman. Emily won’t even squish a spider or swat a fly. So maybe I was trying to atone, by casting them in a heroic light, for all those tasty rodents I slaughtered in the past.

About Gary Battershell:
Being old, I appreciate work that lets me sit down and take frequent breaks. When it makes me laugh out loud once in a while, it’s even better. That’s pretty much the definition of a writer.
I used to be a college history teacher, which was harder, and, before that, I was a high school social studies teacher, which was an actual job and therefore not really suited to my personality or work ethic.
Now I live in the Ozark Mountains where I think deep thoughts and write shallow prose. I really only do one of those.
