“We’ve had Presidents who were beloved but couldn’t find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don’t drink the sand because they’re thirsty. They drink the sand because they don’t know the difference.” –President
(from The American President
I attended a meeting yesterday in which an amazingly talented individual bemoaned the lack of interest in their work.
Let me correct that.
They vented about people’s willingness to pay $60 for crap rather than $500 for something recognizably worth $500 or more.
One reaction could be “Yeah? Get over it.”
Another could be “Yeah? Get use to it.”
To me, it was the situation being described. Someone asked the talented individual if they would take some art photographs of their customized car for inclusion in a marketing piece. The talented individual came up with a quote based on travel, editing, estimated number of shots required, production, … which was 500$US.
The asker laughed and walked away. “Why should I pay $500 when I can get some AI to do it for $60?”
Here’s the important part (again, to me): The person didn’t question the work involved. Didn’t question, didn’t balk, didn’t haggle. They knew the talented individual and knew the quality of their work (it’s why they asked the talented individual in the first place). Their deciding factor was price!
Not quality, not skill, not ability.
None of that came into question.
Purely price.
That, folks, is someone willing to drink sand.
So let’s rewrite The American President quote above:
““We’ve had creatives who were brilliant but couldn’t find an audience with two hands and a flashlight. People don’t take crap distractions because they want crap. They take crap because they don’t know the difference. People don’t drink the sand because they’re thirsty. They drink the sand because they don’t know the difference.” –President

Think I’m an idiot? Let me know in a comment.
Either way, we’ll both learn something.
