I asked fellow Curses anthology contributors to share some things about themselves prior to publication and those generous enough to do so will be appearing here for the next week or so.
Each entry gives a taste of their contribution, a little about them, how to contact them, how their story came about, and definitely a link to Curses (which you should purchase because it would make each and every one of us happy.
you do want to make us happy, don’t you?
i mean, considering what we wrote, you want us to know you’re a good person, right?).
And now, Abe Margel’s Uneasy Spirit:
He came at Carlos Caballero swinging a Bowie knife. It was a practiced attack from a brawny man with hands that had taken part in more than a few barroom fights. Carlos dropped his cards, jumped to his feet and stepped to his left. The blade narrowly missed him.
“Dios mío! a middle-aged woman yelled.
“Shut up,” the bartender said pointing a revolver at her. “Now everybody settle down.”
How the story came about:
I’ve met a number of remarkable Argentineans over the years and even have some distant relatives who may still be living in Buenos Aires. A majority Argentineans have some Italian ancestry. Some of those ancestors originated in Sicily.
Although no horses are present, this fictional account is a sort of Latin American horse opera. Argentine gauchos where known to easily take offence. They regularly resolved their disputes with knives. But Gauchos weren’t the only ones who settled their quarrels with blades.
The story is set in the Argentina of the late 1940s. It begins with a bloody knife fight in a seamy bar in Buenos Aires. A young tough survives the brawl only to find he cannot escape its repercussions. He is hounded by a horrible Sicilian curse that he struggles to evade.
