DL Mullan’s “The Initiation” in Midnight Oil

I asked fellow Midnight Oil anthology contributors to share some things about themselves prior to publication and those generous enough to do so will be appearing here for the next week or so.

Each entry gives a taste of their contribution, a little about them, how to contact them, how their story came about, and definitely a link to Midnight Oil (which you should purchase because it would make each and every one of us happy.
you do want to make us happy, don’t you?
i mean, considering what we wrote, you want us to know you’re a good person, right?).

And now, DL Mullan’s The Initiation:

With a song in her heart, she skipped down her driveway toward her childhood home in Scotland. Her parents exited from a side door. That is when Eliza sprinted.
The missing pieces of her life walked toward her. How she never grasped the void in her soul until she confronted the one event that destroyed her. She had buried her feelings with their deaths. Now, she met the past, present, and future at once.
Out of breath from running toward her heartache, she stood in front of their car’s passenger side door. “You cannot go.”

How the story came about:
The Initiation is a continuation of The Reality Hackers. As her parents before her, Eliza Chisum steps out of her reality and into quantum consciousness. This time, the story revolves around saving her past, present, and future lives.
What inspired me to write The Initiation was the new findings on the Giza Plateau. Imagine a city beneath a city… and an ancient city at that. What if this new archaeological find is the real Atlantis? What if there is technology beyond our own modern gizmos below the surface?
The narrative combines imagination with hard science. Eliza ventures underneath the Great Pyramid and into an antechamber. There, she is reacquainted with her lost love and her past life on Mars. When she is tasked with saving her parents, and thus her brothers, she steps into quantum reality. Unlike her parents’ adventure to reverse the consciousness paradox, she must repair a stitch in the fabric of consciousness itself. That anchor was her parent’s lives.
Synopsis:
Eliza Chisum is following in her father’s footsteps. She is a scientist at heart, but she’s also gifted with her mother’s abilities to pierce the veil. As her intuition educates her on the ways of the universe, to the chagrin of her college professors, she feels the truth. Her teachers know the facts. And, facts don’t care about anyone’s feelings.
When her unconscious reality intersects with an immortal being, Thothiemus from the lost civilization of Atlantis, she discovers that there is more to her parent’s car accident, which killed them, than meets the eye. Eliza volunteers to reorient the space-time continuum.
During her search, she uncovers the truth: her creative physics placed her brothers’, Samuel and James, lives in danger. This leads the young woman down a path of soul-searching, self-actualization, and quantum consciousness.
Will she set the timeline back before the damage cannot be undone? Or, will she be fated to watch her brothers incur the wrath of forces out of her control?
Whatever the future holds, Eliza Chisum ventures beyond time itself, revealing her own destiny from a past she had long forgotten.
Welcome to The Initiation.

DL Mullan’s “The Initiation” is an excellent example of what happens when you mess with time. This story is haunting on many levels. Readers will marvel at the levels of creativity of time itself, and the characters who overcome space and time…or then, maybe not!
