I asked fellow The Rabbit Hole 8: AI and Other Weirdness anthology contributors to share some things about themselves prior to publication and those generous enough to do so will be appearing here over the next few week.
Each entry gives a taste of their contribution, a little about them, how to contact them, how their story came about, and definitely a link to The Rabbit Hole 8: AI and Other Weirdness (which you should purchase because it would make each and every one of us happy.
you do want to make us happy, don’t you?
i mean, considering what we wrote, you want us to know you’re a good person, right?).
About the anthology from Tom Wolosz, Editor
We wonder what AI is. LLM — Large Language Model. — another word for Black Box. What’s in it? Who knows, not even the programmers. Is it a dumb servant that just answers questions at faster than light speed, or is it an artificial mind, a being trapped in cyberspace? And if the latter, is it a loving servant, a future companion, or something sinister which secretly hates its inferior creator? Twenty-four writers give you their diverse takes on this mysterious entity now joining us. And, of course, we can’t overlook the normal weirdness which haunts our dreams. So twelve writers contribute their visions of normal(?), everyday weirdness. Making for thirty-six unique trips down The Rabbit Hole.

And now, Christopher Graves’s The Meddling Light:
I am the Light of San Diego. My directive is to improve the lives of the people in my city by monitoring and performing various functions. Forty-six hours earlier a request was made for additional resources from the city per the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit Operations Manual rev. AG (2048). Several of my capabilities were required as part of that request. This is a new responsibility of which I am glad to assist.
How the story came about:
The idea for this story came from two separate sources. The first is a fascination with the scale of time in prehistoric eras. Millions and millions of years have passed since the dawn of time on Earth. What would it be like to witness that passing of time, which we cannot possibly conceive the enormity of? That, coupled with a philosophical ideology called solipsism was the genesis for “The Meddling Light.” The theory of solipsism postulates that you cannot, with irrefutable proof, know that anyone other than yourself is actually sentient and conscious. This seems especially relevant in regards to artificial intelligence because we cannot ever truly know if they are sentient any more than I can know that you are. Now, what if an artificially intelligent being develops not only consciousness but deep love for their creator? And what if that love is not reciprocated and this being is left with millions of years to stew over that betrayal? That is “The Meddling Light.”

Christopher currently lives in Colorado where he enjoys hiking with his best friend, Marty the Dalmatian, and cooking for his family so they all sit down together and visit. Throughout his life he has always felt lucky because his education and professional history have also complimented his interests: aviation, space travel, and computers. |
