I’m returning to a favorite topic of mine; convincing the reader to go for a ride.
Okay, what I’m going to talk about is moving from normal and relatable to unnormal and unrelatable, but “Convincing the Reader to Go for a Ride” sounds much more romantic, don’t you think?
Because when you write something to be read – and it doesn’t matter if it’s fiction, non-fiction, poetry, blah blah blah – you are essentially asking the reader/audience to trust you to get them to a destination they’ll (for the sake of future sales) enjoy and remember.
How do you get them in the car?
Show them people they already know are already in the car.
The reader may not trust you (especially if they’re new to you and your work) but they’ll trust people they know and get in the car to be with them.
How do you show them people they know are already in the car?
Start off with something normal and relatable.
Next introduce conflict and tension to the normal and relatable.
This subtly changes the normal and relatable to something unnormal and unrelatable.
Handle the transition well and the reader keeps reading to learn how to change what’s going on so they can get back to the normal and relatable, ie, safety.
Enjoy
