And now, The Last Stagecoach:
Gasping, she runs through the forest, pine branches scratching her arms and face as their clawed branches reach for her, pushing her way through the trees. They snatch at her clothes, ripping them, leaving her skirts and petticoats in tatters, and snagging in her carefully set hair. The crunch of pine needles behind her leaves her no choice but to push forward.
How the story came about:
I wanted to write a story about a legendary monster. That was what sparked the idea for the theme of the anthology, and I needed a story to go into it. Not the most exciting inspiration, but for “The Last Stagecoach”, that was it. In fact, I couldn’t decide which legend I wanted to write about. There’s a part in the story after the monster has fallen upon one of the horses, where the characters are debating what it is stalking them. One says it’s a Wendigo, one says it’s a chupacabra, another says it’s a snallygaster, and at that point I think my characters were helping me work through it and decide. I ended up with a chupacabra.
