Samuel

They only come out at night (with all due apologies to The Edgar Winter Group).

Truth is, our coyote come out fairly often. Mostly late afternoons into evening, granted, but often.

This is fine with us.

One of the habits of denning coyote is foraging at night when most reasonable Two-Leggers are asleep or at least safely tucked indoors.

Not so us.

The Wild knows we are not reasonable Two-Leggers.

So it is with Samuel, a handsome and robust father of (we suspect) at least two.

We make sure Samuel has something for his pups.

It’s not our job to preserve The Wild.

But we do attempt to maintain balance. There are many more Two-Leggers who are not willing to share.

You’re not one, are you?

And if you’re not willing to share, you’re not willing to share because…?

Turkeys Keep Nature’s Time

Last night it was raccoons, today it’s turkeys.

Not that we mind, of course.

You’ve heard of “Tiptoe through the Tulips”? You haven’t lived ’till you’ve boxstepped through the turkey turds.

But such is of little concern. We have a healthy flock. Another gathering of The Wild made it through Winter and into Spring (this video is from March 2021).

And through the completely idiotic and human-made time change from standard to daylight savings.

As I’ve written many times and said in many places, don’t save the world, save ourselves. The first step would be paying more attention to and working with Nature’s rhythms.

Turkeys do.

Doesn’t seem to bother them. At all.

Raccoon Pig Pile

Sometimes things get hectic.

Some nights things get very hectic.

Not as hectic as they could be or have been. Once we had over twenty raccoons in our backyard, all with forelegs across their chests, tapping their little raccoon feet, while we put out dog food, peanuts, cookies, and assorted other treats for them.

One night we had fox, raccoon, opossum, skunk, coyote, … it was Grand Central.

We loved it.

But this night it was raccoons only.

Maybe it was a union thing. We don’t know.

Enjoy.

Three Robust Lads

There’s nothing quite like a boy’s night out, eh?

Males in the audience, remember those wonderful bonding times? The fun you had?

Neither do I.

My experiences of western society’s male bonding rituals are probably what led me into cultural anthropology with a vengeance.

Every culture I studied had male rituals. Often they were initiation rituals. There were bonding rituals, yes, and they were vastly different than their western cultural counterparts.

For one, nobody got hurt. There was never a one-ups-manship. Male bondings were more educational than hierarchical.

That last part – hierarchical – have to be careful with that. Put any group of people together and a hierarchy forms. One person alone will form an internal hierarchy, a bifurcation (if not more) of their personality. You’ve probably done the same thing without knowing it.

Ever had an argument with yourself?

Welcome to being human.

Spring Kits

We’re happy to report Hyacinth and her kits made it through another winter. They woke pretty much on schedule and came for their…umm…dinner?

A bit late for breakfast or lunch.

Unless they’re working 3rd shift.

Which is possible. Raccoons are usually nocturnal. At least around here. Except when they’re preggers and/or nursing. Either one, they come around for a good helping of protein and fat (dog food and peanuts).

We’re happy to be of service.

The Wild gives so much.
